Should We Book A Famous Comedian For Our Event?

LenoWhether it’s for a fundraiser, corporate conference or a show in a larger venue sometimes we here at Powers Management Group get calls from people who want to explore the idea of hiring a famous comedian.   They want to  entertain clients or association members, reward their employees or draw a large audience to offset talent expenses, and a recognizable TV star seems like the best way to do it.   Besides, how much could it cost for one measly show?  Well these days a conservative estimate would run around $100,000  and up, sometimes way up depending on the cost of  transportation (air and ground), accommodations and a wide array of possible rider requirements.

Then there’s the little matter of the show itself.   Sometimes the act in question may have been doing movies or a TV show (or worse yet, maybe not).  He or she may not have been performing live very much rendering the act a tad rusty.   Not all comedians routinely work out material in clubs and on the road the way Jay Leno has these last 17 years.  And that’s not likely to be something their representative will be inclined to share with you either.

A  good comedy booking agent will know which comedians are appropriate for which markets.  What comedians do on TV doesn’t necessarily mean that that’s what they do when they perform live.  Event planners may have an idea of who they want, but don’t know that the particular act they want might have a routine that contains profanity or other potentially offensive material.

Economy E-shmonomy – Laugh in the Face of Stress

Even with all of the steps being taken to turn things around, the economy still has many of us worried.  By now we’ve probably done as much as we can to insulate ourselves and our families from the fallout.  All that’s left now is to keep doing all we can then curl into a fetal position and just wait it out, right?  Well, that’s not exactly all we can do…there’s one more thing that still is within our control.  It seems counter intuitive but in fact one of the healthiest things we can do right now is to laugh more.

Research has shown that LAUGHING can:

- lower blood pressure
- reduce stress hormones
- increase muscle flexion
- boost immune function by raising levels of infection-fighting T-cells, disease-fighting proteins called Gammainterferon and B-cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies triggering the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers
- produce a general sense of well-being

Yup, that’s right, we should be laughing in the face of stress.

I’m a cancer survivor, I know a bit about what sheer terror and helplessness feel like.  There comes a time, after you’ve had a good cry, gone through treatment, changed your diet, upped your exercise, read the books on healing and done your praying when you just have to laugh it up.

I can’t promise that laughing will solve your financial woes or cure a life-threatening disease but it can certainly help you deal with them better.

Clean Comedy IS the Best Medicine

laughingpeople

Well technically laughter is the best medicine…as a cancer survivor (13 years now) and purveyor of comedy I believe laughter played a vital  role in my recovery.

Cells within our bodies are constantly changing and mutating to produce potential carcinogenic cells.  An intact immune system can mobilize  natural killer cells to destroy abnormal cells.  Laughter stimulates an increase in the number and activity of natural killer cells that attack viral or cancerous cells.  They are always ready to recognize and attack an aberrant or infected cell.  This becomes very important in the prevention of diseases, especially cancer.    Every day scientific research is proving the importance of psychoneuroimmunology.

I don’t know what the heck that means but I do know that adding frivolity and humor into our daily lives is just as important as eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise.   During these tough economic times it’s more important than ever to pay close attention to your mental and physical health.  Whether it’s watching your favorite comedy show, hanging out with friends, calling your crazy Uncle Kermit or going to a comedy club be sure to find ways to incorporate humor into your life.
Cheers!

Comedy 101 Radio's host

Don’t believe me? Well here’s what the host of Comedy 101 Radio had to say about our roster:

“I really like your group of comedians, smart and funny, with a minimum of profanity.   Very broadcast friendly, that is a good thing.

I still can’t get over what a great stable of artists you have.

Your comedians are top notch, I wish them all the best.

I had a women call me about laughing so hard over Jeff Caldwell’s “Kangaroo Boy” piece that  she blew milk out of her nose…ahhhh, the Holy Grail!”

Irish Bread Recipe for St. Patrick’s Day

oxalis_oreganasmallGramma Casey’s Irish Bread
Preheat oven to 450
Grease and flour a 9″ square baking pan
Ingredients:
5 Tbs room temperature butter
¾ cup sugar (a little less)
2 eggs
3 cups flour
4 tsp baking powder
dash salt
1 ½ tsp caraway seeds
1 cup raisins
¾ cup milk

Cream butter well, add sugar and mix well.  Add eggs, mix until thoroughly incorporated.  Whisk flour, baking powder salt and caraway seeds together in a large bowl then add it to the moist mixture, alternating dry ingredients and milk.  Don’t overmix.  Fold in raisins. The dough should be dense and sticky.  Press into baking pan.

Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes then turn the oven down to 350 and bake for 25-30 minutes until it’s golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Smear softened butter over the top while the bread is still warm.   Allow to cool slightly before cutting.  Enjoy!
